RC NWE: CROSS BORDER MEETING of EXPERTS - Exchange of digital experiences gained in innovation pig projects for practitioners in the food chain - farmers, veterinarians, consultants

Various innovative projects are presented to provide an insight into the digitalization in pig farming to increase pig health as well as the competitiveness. In the projects with various approaches of funding and designs, data on the stable climate, production conditions as well as animal behaviour and health are collected.
To evaluate digitalization, the experiences of digitization and its impact on improving animal health and competitiveness are discussed by the participants in the project and stakeholders of the whole food chain, e. g. farmers, veterinarians, consultants, food processors, marketers, researchers, and technology experts.
The concept of the event allows evaluating the importance of sensor data for different participants in the food chain. Stable climate data may have value for the farmer but can also have value for stakeholders in the food chain (e. g. to improve the transparency of pork production). The increase in synergy effects can also lead to improved efficiency of digitization.

Due to the costs and benefits of a sensor, farmers may not be willing to implement the sensor. However, if the sensor data creates value for both the farmer and others in the food chain (e. g. the marketer), then investing in a sensor may be economical.
Furthermore, the sensors and the housing of the pigs are shown during a walkthrough in the barn. On this occasion and during the lunch break, it is the opportunity for networking for all participants. The attendees of various links of the food chain have the opportunity to get in touch with each other.
